Bangkok Modernizes Animal Shelter to Address Stray Population

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is upgrading its Prawet animal shelter, established in 1997, to better address the city’s stray animal problem. Originally a rabies quarantine facility, the shelter now focuses on managing a population affected by negligence and violence.

Recent renovations, completed around 2024, include improved kennels, dedicated play areas, and enhanced screening processes. The BMA is also expanding adoption programs, coordinating with NGOs and utilizing the new BKK Adopter online platform.

Currently, the shelter houses approximately 200 dogs and 300 cats, but not all are immediately available for adoption, behavioral training is a priority. The shelter prioritizes sterilisation and vaccination, marking animals with identifying symbols before releasing them back into their communities to control population growth. Officials emphasize that responsible pet ownership is crucial to solving the stray animal issue and urge potential owners to consider adopting from shelters.
