Why this is here: Wildlife enthusiast Dinesh Saravanan has volunteered to fill water troughs in the Vellore forest range for several years, highlighting a sustained, local commitment to supporting forest animals.

Forest officials and wildlife enthusiasts are filling water troughs in Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, and Tiruvannamalai forests to help animals during rising temperatures. The initiative began over a week ago to provide water for species like spotted deer and elephants. Officials identify dry areas and volunteers help fill troughs and percolation ponds with water delivered by tanker lorries.

Each forest range averages six to seven water troughs across approximately 3,000 hectares. Refilling a 7,500-liter trough costs between ₹800 and ₹1,000 and occurs every two weeks.

The Tiruvannamalai range includes seven reserve forests covering 13,000 hectares, with Anamalai RF holding fourteen large troughs on 900 hectares. Volunteers are also providing salt licks for animals to obtain necessary minerals. This effort will continue until the end of May.
