Chennai Families Inspire Blood Donation

Shaikh Shamsudeen and his father, Shaikh Sadaqathullah, of Chennai, India, continue a family tradition of donating the rare AB Negative blood type when urgent needs arise. Shamsudeen, 29, began donating a decade ago inspired by his father, and together they’ve donated a combined 75 times. Both are registered with the Madras Voluntary Blood Bureau (MVBB) which contacts them directly when AB Negative blood is critically needed.

Another Chennai resident, R. Ravikumar, 65, has donated 106 times, following in the footsteps of his father who donated over 50 times. Ravikumar views blood donation as a family legacy and prioritizes his health through fitness to maintain his ability to donate.

These individuals demonstrate the power of familial influence in encouraging blood donation, a practice that organizations like the Federation of Indian Blood Donors Organisation are hoping to increase amid declining donor numbers.
