Guntur Corporation Works to Eliminate Begging
Why this is here: The city’s survey teams are specifically targeting major public areas and residential localities to ensure all individuals engaged in begging are identified for support.
Guntur Municipal Corporation identified 502 people begging in the city through an enumeration drive. The corporation aims to make Guntur beggar-free by implementing rehabilitation measures. The survey began March 18, 2026, and covers key public areas like bus and railway stations.
The initiative operates under the Union government’s “SMILE” program. Tirupati-based Rojavanam Trust conducts the survey for the GMC. The program provides shelter, food, healthcare, and skill development.
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment sanctioned ₹9 lakh for the project’s first installment. The project will last three years and coordinate municipal, district, and welfare agencies. Officials will tailor interventions to each individual’s socio-economic background.
