Why this is here: The exhibition’s opening ceremony included residents of Gatlang, highlighting a direct connection between the documented community and the urban audience viewing the work.

A photo exhibition displaying the lives of women in Gatlang, Rasuwa, opened Monday in Kathmandu. Sixteen photographs by Keshab Raj Thoker document daily life in the village of approximately 600 households. The village primarily consists of Tamang and Dalit communities who rely on agriculture, livestock, and tourism.

Explore Nepal Network organized the exhibition at Umoja Cafe in New Baneshwar. Nyanjom Tamang, a Gatlang resident, and Lhakpa Chhomo Tamang inaugurated the event and became emotional while viewing the photographs. Buchung Tamang, chair of Aamachhodingmo Rural Municipality, believes the exhibit will promote tourism to Gatlang.

Photojournalist Keshab Raj Thoker has worked for nearly twenty years. He previously worked at Nepal Samacharpatra, Nagarik daily, and Ayo Mail.

Thoker also published a photo book documenting the Covid-19 pandemic. The exhibition will remain open to the public until Wednesday.
