Nagaland Embraces World Cup Fever with Celebrations & Local Tournaments

Residents of Nagaland, India are enthusiastically celebrating the FIFA World Cup through mass screenings, local tournaments, and displays of national flags. The state has a deep-rooted passion for football, considered more popular than cricket, and the World Cup is seen as a unifying force across tribes and generations.

In Mokokchung, a group constructed a 15-foot World Cup replica from bamboo, while in Phesama, villagers continue a tradition of holding their own “Mini World Cup” tournament after each FIFA event, started in 1994. The celebrations extend beyond major cities, with handmade flags adorning streets and spontaneous processions erupting after victories.

While enthusiasm for the sport is high, officials are now focused on building a sustainable local football culture beyond just tournament excitement. The next focus will be on fostering growth within the Nagaland football ecosystem.
