Drones Speed Up TB Diagnosis in Rural India

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) used drones to transport tuberculosis (TB) sputum samples, cutting diagnosis time from 15 to 5 days for people in remote areas of Telangana. A study conducted in Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri district, in collaboration with AIIMS Bibinagar and the District TB Office, compared traditional sample transport with the drone-based model. Researchers enrolled 840 participants and observed a significant decrease in the time needed to confirm a diagnosis.

The i-DRONE initiative also dramatically lowered out-of-pocket expenses for patients, from approximately ₹9,451 to around ₹91. This reduction stemmed from lower travel costs and increased access to local sputum collection points.

ICMR plans to use the findings to inform future public health innovations and strengthen existing healthcare delivery systems. Experts note that integrating drone technology with established healthcare networks is crucial for maximizing its impact on patient outcomes and early disease detection.
