Madhya Pradesh Approves Draft Uniform Civil Code

The Madhya Pradesh cabinet approved a draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill on Sunday, criminalizing practices like triple talaq and nikah halala, prohibiting polygamy, and requiring registration of live-in relationships. The bill, slated for introduction during the upcoming monsoon session of the state assembly, aims to establish a common set of laws governing personal matters for all citizens, regardless of religion.

The proposed legislation grants equal rights to children regardless of their birth circumstances, biological, adopted, surrogacy, or assisted reproductive technology, and ensures equal inheritance rights for all children. Couples entering live-in relationships must register within one month or face penalties, including potential imprisonment and fines.

Notably, the bill exempts Scheduled Tribes from its scope, respecting constitutional safeguards. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav framed the UCC as a step towards equality, justice, and women’s empowerment, citing support for the bill from a majority of Muslim women and men.

The government also referenced the UCCs of Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam in formulating the draft. The bill’s passage could establish a unified legal framework within Madhya Pradesh, replacing religion-specific personal laws.
