India’s National Pension System (NPS) is experiencing growth, but remains heavily reliant on mandatory contributions from government employees. As of recently, the system holds a corpus of approximately ₹16 lakh crore, with ₹12.5 lakh crore contributed by government subscribers and roughly ₹3.5 lakh crore from the private sector.

While private sector adoption is improving, it lags significantly behind, with annual inflows of ₹0.9-0.95 lakh crore compared to the government’s ₹1.1-1.2 lakh crore. Sriram Iyer, MD & CEO of HDFC Pension, highlights the need for continued expansion and innovation within the NPS framework.
