Argentine Created Friend’s Day Inspired by Apollo 11

Enrique Ernesto Febbraro, an Argentine dentist, psychologist, writer, and historian, created Friend’s Day after watching the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. Febbraro viewed the event as a demonstration of global unity and proposed a day to celebrate selfless affection. He launched a letter-writing campaign, personally funding and sending 1,000 letters to leaders in 100 countries advocating for July 20th as a day of universal fraternity.

The campaign gained traction, receiving 77 affirmative responses and eventually leading the Buenos Aires province government to officially recognize Friend’s Day in 1979. The celebration expanded to Uruguay, Brazil, and Chile, and Febbraro was repeatedly nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Febbraro died in Buenos Aires in 2008, but his legacy continues in the Río de la Plata region as a symbol of community and social cohesion.
