Gibraltar and Spain Open Border After Decades of Restrictions

The United Kingdom and the European Union fully opened the border between Gibraltar and Spain on Wednesday, dismantling the physical fence known as “La Verja.” This change implements a post-Brexit treaty allowing for Schengen-style free movement for pedestrians, ending decades of friction at the crossing.

For years, the border saw restrictions and even a complete closure from 1969 to 1985 under Franco’s regime. Now, the approximately 15,000 Spanish workers and numerous tourists who cross daily will no longer face queues or barriers.

While British sovereignty over Gibraltar remains unchanged, security checks have moved to Gibraltar's airport and seaport, jointly managed by Spanish and Gibraltarian authorities. The treaty, a 1,000-page document signed in Brussels, aims to foster regional integration and economic cooperation after a period of uncertainty following Brexit.
