Argentine Artists Explore Space & Hidden Images

Two exhibitions at the Ruth Benzacar gallery in Buenos Aires feature the work of Raquel Forner and Jazmín López, both examining how images shape our understanding of the world. Forner, a 20th-century Argentine artist, created paintings of astronauts and cosmic landscapes decades before discussions of space exploration became commonplace. Her work, displayed in “Futuro acontecer”, anticipates contemporary themes like artificial intelligence and ecological crisis.

Meanwhile, Jazmín López’s “El origen del mundo” revisits Gustave Courbet’s famous painting of the same name. López’s installation features a recreation of the painting’s pose, highlighting the historical conditions of visibility and representation of the female body. The exhibition forces viewers to consider what images are hidden, and how they circulate within cultural institutions.

Both artists offer unique perspectives on the power of imagery, one projecting into the future and the other interrogating the past. The exhibitions run through August 29th.
