Jujuy Authorities Rescue 43 Vicuñas From Illegal Breeding Operation

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Jujuy, Argentina, rescued 43 vicuñas from an illegal breeding operation that had been running since the 1990s. Authorities dismantled the clandestine facilities, removing posts, fences, and shade netting. Veterinary staff provided health checks, vaccinations, and medication to the rescued animals.

The operation involved coordinated work between local communities, neighbors, and public organizations. Specialists used stress-reduction protocols, including protective hoods, during loading and transport.

The vicuñas were moved to the Miraflores facilities of the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) in Abra Pampa. There, they will receive ongoing veterinary care and monitoring in a suitable environment. The rescue aligns with provincial policies protecting native fauna and enforcing animal welfare laws.
