Why this is here: The Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo began organizing in 1977, seeking answers about the fate of their family members and initiating a continuing fight for identity and freedom.

Argentina commemorates the National Day of Memory for Truth and Justice on March 24th, honoring victims of the 1976-1983 civic-military dictatorship. The date marks the 1976 coup led by Jorge Rafael Videla, Emilio Massera, and Orlando Agosti. This period saw serious crimes against humanity including forced disappearances, torture, and murder.

In 1977, the Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo formed to search for their children and grandchildren. They continue to seek justice and identity for the disappeared. Raúl Ricardo Alfonsín’s 1983 election restored democracy.

The National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons investigated the crimes, leading to trials and convictions for several leaders. The phrase “Nunca más” ("Never again") became the motto for the day. A 2002 law established March 24th as a national holiday.
