New York Awards $10 Million to Yonkers for Downtown Revitalization

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced Yonkers as the regional winner of the ninth round of the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI). The city, located about an hour from Queens, will receive $10 million to boost its economy and revitalize its downtown area. Yonkers has transitioned from an industrial center to a hub for innovation and economic opportunity, and the DRI funds will support community development, public spaces, pedestrian-friendly streets, and cultural destinations.

The city has already invested in reclaiming land along the Saw Mill River, creating green spaces and public access. Recent investment from companies like Great Point Studios and Lionsgate have also established Yonkers as a growing center for film and television production, earning it the nickname “Hollywood on the Hudson.”

In addition to Yonkers, Ellenville and Livingston Manor will each receive $4.5 million through the NY Forward program to renovate their downtowns. Access to these funds requires localities to be certified through the Pro-Housing Communities program, which recognizes municipalities actively developing housing potential.
