Argentina to Relocate 30 Big Cats From Abandoned Zoo

In August, animal welfare organization Four Paws will begin transferring thirty big cats from the abandoned Luján Zoo in Argentina to sanctuaries in South Africa and the United States. The zoo closed nearly six years ago, leaving around 400 animals, including 130 big cats, to fend for themselves. Fifteen tigers and lions will travel to Lionsrock sanctuary in South Africa, while another fifteen will go to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado, both facilities offering large, naturalistic habitats.

The transfer comes after years of neglect and uncertainty following the zoo's closure in 2020. Many animals, including an estimated 60 big cats, died due to lack of care. Four Paws began assessing the remaining animals last October, providing veterinary care and preparing them for relocation.

The organization is also working to end the practice of canned hunting and educate the public about responsible animal welfare. Argentine officials are cooperating with Four Paws, signaling a shift towards improved animal protection policies.
