Keiko Fujimori Seeks Peru’s Entry Into US-Led Security Coalition

Keiko Fujimori, Peru’s president-elect, stated her intention to have Peru join the “Shield of the Americas”, a security coalition spearheaded by United States President Donald Trump. Fujimori emphasized the US as an ally, noting Peru became a NATO observer through Trump’s initiative. She plans to accept US support against drug trafficking and organized crime within the bounds of Peruvian law.

Fujimori also expressed regret over lost opportunities to strengthen ties with Colombia due to the outgoing president Gustavo Petro’s comments on Peruvian politics, and affirmed Peru will firmly defend its sovereignty regarding the Santa Rosa island dispute. She intends to prioritize restoring Peru’s governmental functions and will focus primarily on domestic issues, though she hopes to meet with Trump.

Fujimori further proposed forming a right-leaning coalition of governments in Latin America to collaborate on migration policies, crime fighting, and intelligence sharing. Her government plans to accelerate infrastructure projects via international bidding to combat crime, strengthen the prison system, and deploy the armed forces to secure borders.
