1891 Patent Shows Original Toilet Paper Direction

In 1891, American inventor Seth Wheeler patented perforated toilet paper with diagrams showing the sheet hanging over the roll. Wheeler initially patented perforated paper in 1871, then improved the roll system to easily tear off individual sheets and reduce waste. His original design used gravity to help users detach each sheet without the roll unraveling.

Some health experts suggest hanging the paper over the roll may be more hygienic. Christian Moro, a health sciences professor at Bond University, explains this position minimizes contact with potentially contaminated walls or holders. However, people often cite aesthetics or safety—especially with pets or children—as reasons to place the sheet against the wall.

Cultural habits also influence preference, with Japan increasingly using smart toilets with water cleansing systems. Meanwhile, the rise of wet wipes presents new environmental concerns regarding sewer blockages and waste management. The debate continues as alternatives emerge and habits differ.
