Argentina Marks 50 Years Since Dictatorship With Protests

Why this is here: The protests drew multigenerational participation, with parents like Jerónimo Laurenzi bringing young children to ensure the memory of the dictatorship continues to be passed down.
Hundreds of thousands protested in Buenos Aires and other Argentine cities demanding justice for those disappeared during the 1976-1983 military dictatorship. The protests marked the 50th anniversary of the start of the dictatorship and the National Day for Truth and Justice. Demonstrators chanted “They must tell us where they are!” demanding information about the remains of victims.
The protests also included criticism of current President Javier Milei. Protesters accused his government of attempting to alter the official narrative of the period. Opposition figures, including Sergio Massa and Axel Kicillof, joined the demonstrations.
Human rights organizations protested reductions in state resources for searching for disappeared persons and identifying children taken by the military. The government released a video suggesting a need to “revise” the past, including violence committed by guerrilla groups.
