UCAB Publishes Communication Theory Textbook

Why this is here: The book specifically addresses the need for critical communication skills in the context of misinformation and echo chambers, as Edixela Burgos frames communication as a space for ethical and civic responsibility.
The Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (UCAB) published “Teorías Sociales de la Comunicación,” a collective work by Venezuelan academics. The book, released by Abediciones, aims to strengthen curriculum design and provide students with conceptual tools for critical analysis of contemporary communication.
The text is a result of collaboration between UCAB’s IDICI institute and the School of Social Communication. It adapts existing curriculum to current needs and promotes interdisciplinary knowledge sharing for democratic communication. The book’s chapters cover topics including critical thinking, the sociocultural aspects of communication, normative theories, media effects, the Frankfurt School, and communication studies in Latin America.
Jesús Lovera Torres’s chapter highlights the work of Antonio Pasquali, a key figure in Latin American communication research, and the role of university research institutes. The authors intend the book to serve as a reference for students, researchers, and professionals seeking to understand communication as a social phenomenon.
