Ecuador’s Cultural Renaissance on Display in Lima

Ecuador will be the guest of honor at the 30th edition of the Lima International Book Fair opening July 22nd in the Jockey Exhibition Center in Peru. The country previously held this distinction in 2010, a time when Ecuadorian literature was perceived as isolated and struggling to gain recognition following the “Latin American Boom.” Author Carlos Fuentes famously invented an Ecuadorian author, Marcelo Chiriboga, as a joke to fill the perceived gap in representation.

Today, Ecuadorian authors like Gabriela Alemán and María Fernanda Heredia are gaining prominence. Illustrator Roger Ycaza, part of Ecuador’s delegation to the book fair, notes a creative surge in Ecuador but emphasizes the need for stronger collaborative networks to amplify Ecuadorian voices beyond individual authors.

Ycaza draws inspiration from Ecuador’s artistic traditions, including the Quito School and the work of Eduardo Kingman, while striving for universal themes in his illustrations. He will present his book “Diabluras” at the fair on July 23rd.
