California authorities recommend residents download the MyShake app, a free tool connected to the state’s early earthquake warning system, to receive notifications before seismic activity begins. The app utilizes the ShakeAlert network of seismic sensors to detect earthquakes and, when possible, sends alerts allowing individuals to take protective measures.

MyShake sends alerts for earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.5 or higher that may affect a user’s location. While the warning time varies depending on distance from the epicenter, ranging from a few seconds to 30 seconds or more, even a short notice can provide crucial time to drop, cover, and hold on.

Beyond downloading the app, officials advise following local authorities on social media, identifying emergency radio stations, preparing an emergency kit, and creating a family plan. Users should also periodically check MyShake settings to ensure notifications and location permissions remain enabled.
