Ecuador Launches Campaign to Protect Palm Trees During Easter

Why this is here: The campaign directly addresses a specific threat to a vulnerable species by offering alternative materials for a long-held religious tradition, balancing cultural practices with biodiversity conservation.
The Ecuadorian government launched a national campaign on March 24, 2026, to protect the wax palm during Holy Week. The “Tradition and conservation go hand in hand” initiative aims to prevent the illegal cutting of these native Andean trees. The Ministry of Environment and Energy has worked for over 15 years to conserve six species of the Ceroxylon genus, many of which are vulnerable or critically endangered.
Palm fronds are traditionally used on Palm Sunday. Illegal harvesting of young shoots threatens the palm’s survival, as the plants take over 80 years to reproduce. The government is coordinating with the Catholic Church and National Police to protect the species.
The campaign promotes crafting palm branches from alternative, recyclable materials. These include laurel, corn husk, straw, and ornamental flowers.
The Ministry of Environment is also offering training to artisans and implementing environmental education programs. Illegal harvesting carries a prison sentence of one to three years under Ecuador’s penal code.
