Dog Attends Court Hearing in Ecuador

In Ecuador’s Daule, a two-year-old cocker spaniel named Capuccino attended a court hearing regarding his legal guardian on May 15. Yailin Proaño, connecting via video from Madrid, Spain, argued she is Capuccino’s legal guardian. Sara González, accused of illegally retaining the dog, claimed she received Capuccino voluntarily and provided him with care.

The judge questioned how Capuccino would be transported to Spain, as Proaño is currently unable to travel to Ecuador due to visa issues. Proaño’s parents, present in court, stated they would care for Capuccino until he could be sent to Spain with a family member. González expressed concern about Capuccino’s well-being but agreed to relinquish him to family.

The judge ruled that Capuccino’s rights had not been violated and requested Proaño provide details about his departure. The judge clarified the case was not about ownership but about ensuring the animal’s welfare, acknowledging animal rights are not lesser than human rights. The court awaits confirmation of Capuccino’s travel plans.
