Peru Boosts Education Funding to Raise Teacher Pay & Expand Scholarships

The Peruvian government approved a supplementary credit of 1,224.5 million soles to strengthen the education sector nationwide. The funds will improve working conditions for teachers and expand access to higher education.

Approximately 29,600 public university teachers and over 11,900 teachers in technological institutes will receive increased pay starting in September 2026. Additionally, around 435,000 teachers and educational assistants will receive a one-time bonus of 487 soles as recognition for their work.

The credit also allocates funds to finance 2,000 new Beca 18 scholarships, bringing the total number of new scholarships this year to over 7,000. A significant portion of the funding, 559.5 million soles, will go towards 238 infrastructure projects in regional and local governments, aiming to close gaps in educational facilities. The government also committed resources to ongoing debt payments and preparations for the Lima 2027 Pan American and Parapan American Games.
