Peruvian Amazon Region Backs Conservation Area for Water Supply

The Regional Amazonian Commonwealth supports the approval of the Yanajanca Regional Conservation Area in Huánuco, Peru, which would protect water sources for approximately 120,000 people. The proposed area encompasses 209,484.56 hectares spanning Andean and Amazonian ecosystems including wetlands, lakes, and cloud forests.

The Commonwealth views Yanajanca as a historic opportunity for Huánuco and Peru, emphasizing its importance for water security and biodiversity. The Ministry of the Environment has already published the draft supreme decree outlining the area’s creation, opening a period for public input.

Currently, the proposal awaits approval from the Vice-Ministerial Coordinating Council. Approval would then send the proposal to the Council of Ministers for final decree signing. Protecting this area is considered vital for local agriculture, coffee production, tourism, and other economies.
