Rethabile Khumalo Releases Album About Her Mother

Rethabile Khumalo released her third studio album, Kwelizayo, in South Africa, detailing her experience with grief after her mother, Winnie Khumalo, died on January 7, 2025. Khumalo began developing the album shortly after her mother’s death, using the creative process as a way to process her emotions. Composer Sipho Melusi Msimango assisted Khumalo with songwriting and production during this time.

The artist found returning to music difficult initially, as it held close ties to her relationship with her mother. She channeled her pain into the album, fostering personal and creative growth. Khumalo describes her mother as both a parent and a vital source of support.

Last April, Khumalo honored her mother by opening a food truck at 176773/8 Protea Glen Ext 9, Cheesehood Avenue. She intends to continue pursuing dreams she shared with her mother and make her proud. The artist acknowledges adjusting to life without her mother remains a challenge.
