South Africa to Discuss Migration and Governance

Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation in South Africa will convene a dialogue on July 23 to address migration as a complex issue tied to governance, economic insecurity, and social cohesion. The foundation, sponsored by MTN, intends to foster honest engagement among policymakers, business leaders, and communities regarding migration’s impact on South Africa and the continent.

Migration has historically shaped South Africa’s economy, particularly through the mining sector, and continues to be integral to trade and economic survival across Africa. The discussion will focus on strengthening state capacity, public trust, and economic prosperity while upholding legal and humane treatment of migrants.

The foundation acknowledges that communities often experience migration through strains on public services and job competition, concerns which must be addressed. The dialogue seeks to move beyond simplistic conclusions and explore how effective governance, including competent administration, border management, and regional cooperation, can manage migration sustainably. The event aims to initiate a long-term conversation about migration as a defining feature of the 21st century.
