South Africa Aims to Curb Illegal Mining with System Overhaul

Fred Arendse of the Junior Mining Council argues that South Africa must streamline its legal mining processes to discourage illegal operations. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources’ new digital cadastre system, which provides real-time information on mining areas and applications, is presented as a key reform. The success of this system will depend on its ability to accelerate licensing decisions and restore investor confidence, ensuring that legitimate mining ventures aren’t driven towards illegal operations due to bureaucratic hurdles.
