Ramaphosa Pledges Action on South Africa’s Water Crisis

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s administration committed to addressing South Africa’s water crisis, linking the effort to the legacy of Nelson Mandela. The President detailed government responses in a recent weekly letter, focusing on expanding access to safe water for underserved communities. The National Water Access Acceleration Programme utilizes decentralized water supply schemes, a key initiative presented during the State of the Nation address.

Ramaphosa recently handed over boreholes to the Hammanskraal community and commissioned the Klipdrift Package Water Treatment Plant. Deputy President Paul Mashatile oversaw similar interventions in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape, including borehole drilling, groundwater development, and rainwater harvesting.

The government’s actions aim to alleviate hardship for households, communities, and businesses impacted by the ongoing water crisis. Further implementation of the National Water Access Acceleration Programme and related initiatives are expected to continue in the coming months.
