Cuca Tops’ Rise: Namibian Club’s History of Resilience

Author Mathias Ngwangwama details Cuca Tops FC’s journey from its founding in Rundu, Namibia, in 1970 to becoming the first team from the Kavango region to qualify for the Namibia National Super League before independence. The book, ‘Mind is Might: The History of Cuca Tops Football Club’, examines the club’s success as a case study in high-performance culture, leadership, and overcoming logistical challenges.

Ngwangwama’s four-year research project uncovered the club’s diverse roster, including players from Zambia and Angola, and the origin of its name, linked to the smuggled Angolan Cuca beer. He found that Cuca Tops often traveled 1,500 kilometers round trip to compete against better-funded teams.

The author hopes his work will inspire greater preservation of Namibian sporting history, noting a scarcity of archival data and a need for clubs to strengthen their records. The book, published by Unam Press, is available for N$250 and is intended to contribute to Namibia’s cultural heritage.
