Namibia Receives $370M for Vocational Training & AI

The African Development Bank will invest N$5.6 billion (approximately $370 million USD) in Namibia’s technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system and artificial intelligence initiatives. The funding aims to modernize vocational institutions, establish a National Artificial Intelligence Institute, and generate 15,000 workplace opportunities for young Namibians by 2030.

The success of this investment hinges on broader economic conditions. Analysts point out that job creation will be limited if state tenders continue to favor failing state-owned enterprises over private companies, hindering growth and the ability to hire skilled workers.

Namibia also needs to accelerate the development of laws and regulations surrounding artificial intelligence to fully capitalize on the investment. Minister of Information and Communication Technology Emma Theofelus will play a key role in this process. The future absorption of vocational training graduates into the job market depends on fair allocation of state contracts.
