Why this is here: The project prioritized animal welfare and community benefit by relocating giraffes from a reserve exceeding its carrying capacity, ensuring their survival and contributing to Somkhanda’s tourism potential.

Eight giraffes were moved from Pongola Game Reserve to Somkhanda Community Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal. The translocation aimed to improve genetic diversity within Somkhanda’s giraffe population.

The project involved collaboration between WildTrust, the Wildlife Emergency Fund, Albus Environmental, and the Somkhanda Wildlife Foundation. Experts selected several bulls and six breeding cows for the move to Somkhanda, a 12,000-hectare Big Five reserve owned by the Emvokweni Community Trust.

Somkhanda’s manager stated the operation followed best-practice animal welfare guidelines. The new giraffes will integrate with the existing herd to improve breeding success and long-term population health. The translocation also benefits the local Gumbi community by enhancing tourism revenue and supporting local economic activity.

Across Africa, giraffe populations have declined nearly 30% in the last three decades. Conservationists view translocations as a crucial tool for managing wildlife in fragmented landscapes and maintaining genetic diversity.
