Why this is here: Private companies are currently constructing at least 635 megawatts of new power capacity within Zimbabwe, with an additional 730 megawatts nearing financial approval.

Cletus Nyachowe of ZESA Holdings reported that private power producers, mining companies, and independent developers in Zimbabwe are building over 635 megawatts of new energy capacity. Zhongjin Heli has commissioned a 100MW plant and is 45 percent complete with a 135MW expansion scheduled for September 2026. Sunny Jinlong’s 90MW thermal plant near Norton is 35 percent complete, with factory acceptance tests planned in China for May 2026.

Several solar projects also progress. Mapanzure 50MW Solar is 70 percent complete, aiming for a June 2026 commissioning. Zimplats has already commissioned 35MW of its 80MW solar project, while Power Ventures nears completion of its 25MW plant near Victoria Falls.

Nyachowe noted that private investment extends to grid infrastructure, including transformer projects funded by Bulawayo Mining Company and Zambezi Gas and Coal Mining Company. While 730MW more projects are finalizing financing, achieving zero power imports by December 2027 remains the target.
