First Lady Funds Solo Flights for Six Pilots

Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa’s Angel of Hope Foundation enabled six Zimbabwean students to fly solo at Central Air Transport Services (CATS) in Harare.

The students, selected for academic ability and financial need, have collectively logged close to 100 flight hours. They’ve flown to destinations including Kariba and the Zambezi Valley as part of their training.

Some trainees initially battled anxiety during their first solo flights, using prayer and music to cope. They are now progressing to advanced training, including night flying and instrument flight rules. CATS instructors report the students have exceeded expectations in both skill and conduct.

The program aims to broaden opportunity in aviation, with one trainee initially a replacement after another failed a medical exam. The students expressed gratitude for the chance to pursue their dreams, with one noting the program’s support for female pilots.

While three students have already earned their Private Pilot Licenses, the remaining three are scheduled for testing this week. The initiative reflects Dr. Mnangagwa’s commitment to education and skills development for vulnerable populations.
