Latitudes Art Fair Returns to Joburg

Lucy McGarry and the Latitudes team are preparing to host the RMB Latitudes Art Fair at Shepstone Gardens in Johannesburg, South Africa, from May 22 to 24. The fair’s 2026 theme, “Oasis,” asks artists to consider creativity within urban spaces. Latitudes aims to prioritize artists and support their long-term careers by offering visibility and sustainable practice opportunities.

This year’s event expands its Index program. Rand Merchant Bank and the National Arts Council partnered to showcase artists not currently represented by galleries. The fair also features a Nigeria Pavilion, collaborating with Yenwa Gallery in Lagos to bring over 30 Nigerian artists to Johannesburg.

The fair’s success builds on previous years, though organizers acknowledge ongoing needs for funding and bureaucratic support to fully transform Johannesburg’s art landscape. Latitudes continues to develop programs to foster artistic growth across the African continent.
