South Africa’s Glass Economy Relies on Collaborative Recycling Network

The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) and over 80 member companies in South Africa work together to ensure glass is endlessly recyclable and remains a valuable resource. These organizations support a network spanning glass manufacturers to food and beverage brands, focusing on recovering and returning glass for new packaging.

The TGRC utilizes Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees paid by its members to invest in collection infrastructure, public awareness campaigns, and support for waste pickers and buy-back centers. This investment is crucial as the challenge isn’t the recyclability of glass itself, but rather ensuring sufficient recovery and return to local manufacturers.

This collaborative approach connects various industries, creating a circular economy model.
