In 2031, the global pharmaceutical industry no longer uses animals for drug testing, a practice that involved 111 million animals annually in 2024. The shift occurred not due to ethical campaigns, but because “organ-on-a-chip” technology proved more effective and affordable around 2028.

The Food and Drug Administration signaled acceptance of the new method in 2024, leading to a phased elimination of animal testing. A pharmaceutical company developed a key “liver-on-a-chip” device, a small plastic slab with human liver cells, that accelerated drug development and reduced failed trials.

While animal rights groups advocated for this outcome for decades, it was economic factors, specifically faster development cycles and reduced costs, that drove the change. Legacy primate research centers still exist for neuroscience, but their funding is under annual review.
