China Studies Carbon-Neutral Coal Mining

Researchers examined pathways to carbon neutrality for coal mines in China’s Yellow River Basin, focusing on the Yongning Coal Mine in Shanxi Province. Coal mining supports economic development in the region but also generates substantial carbon emissions, creating a challenge for China’s commitments to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

The study proposes three strategies for transitioning coal mines toward carbon neutrality: carbon offsets, a self-balancing carbon model, and market incentives. Researchers found that purchasing carbon offsets offers limited cost benefits.

The report emphasizes improving emission reduction efficiency, increasing carbon sinks through ecological restoration, and expanding clean energy use as key elements for balancing carbon budgets. Further research will need to determine the economic feasibility of these strategies at scale and across different geological contexts within the Yellow River Basin.
