Roman Guardian Spirit Unearthed in England After 1,600 Years

Archaeologist Andrew Birley discovered a sandstone carving of a Genius, a protective spirit, while excavating a Roman barracks at Vindolanda in northern England on June 16. The 17-inch tall relief depicts the spirit holding symbols of abundance and prosperity and was intentionally placed face down beneath a fourth-century floor.

Experts identified the figure based on its attributes, noting that such carvings are rare finds offering insight into personal religious practices in Roman Britain. The Vindolanda site, south of Hadrian’s Wall, is known for its exceptionally well-preserved artifacts due to waterlogged conditions, including over 1,700 wooden writing tablets.

This new discovery complements a relief of the goddess Victory found nearby, revealing both public and private religious beliefs of the fort’s inhabitants. Researchers are currently conserving the sculpture, which will eventually be displayed at the Vindolanda museum. The find connects Birley to a three-generation family legacy of excavation at the site.
