Ancient Structure in Zambia Rewrites Early Human History

Archaeologists in Zambia discovered a half-million-year-old wooden structure at Kalambo Falls, demonstrating that early humans, not Homo sapiens, possessed advanced construction skills. The structure, built from deliberately shaped and joined logs, predates the emergence of our species by over 150,000 years.

Researchers used luminescence dating to determine the age of the wood, as radiocarbon dating wasn’t possible due to its age. The discovery challenges the notion that Stone Age humans were solely nomadic and minimally invested in their surroundings.

The site’s consistently wet conditions preserved the wood, offering a rare glimpse into early human technology. Additional finds in China and Greece suggest this wasn’t an isolated incident, hinting at a “Wood Age” alongside the Stone Age.

Kalambo Falls is now on Zambia’s UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, recognizing its unique archaeological value. Researchers hope further excavation will reveal more about the builders and their capabilities.
