Researchers at Peking University tracked forest growth in China from 2000 to 2022 and discovered that planted forests increased leaf area 65.8% faster than natural forests initially. While planted forests showed a clear advantage, the researchers accounted for age differences, planted forests averaged 34 years old compared to 57 for natural forests, and still found a 4.6% faster growth rate. This boost in growth is largely attributed to the carbon dioxide fertilization effect, where plants utilize increased atmospheric CO₂ to produce more tissue.
However, this effect appears strongest in younger forests, peaking around 30 to 40 years old. The team emphasizes that canopy growth isn’t the same as carbon storage, as trees also sequester carbon in trunks, roots, and soil.
Ultimately, natural forests offer greater biodiversity and resilience. The study suggests a combined approach, planting trees where appropriate and protecting existing natural forests, is crucial for effective climate policy and long-term ecosystem health.
