Portuguese City Tests Limits of Sustainable Living

In Guimarães, Portugal, elected officials and scientists are collaborating to determine if a high quality of life can be achieved within planetary boundaries. The city is undertaking a “green transition” focused on reducing resource use and embracing circular economic models, like revitalizing its historic textile industry with recycled materials.

This effort is informed by the concept of “planetary boundaries”, nine essential limits on Earth’s systems, of which humanity has already exceeded seven. The project aims to define a “consumption corridor” where everyone can live comfortably without exceeding those limits, requiring shifts in what societies consider necessities versus luxuries.

Guimarães has already reduced waste per person by 18 percent since 2018 through incentivized recycling and waste reduction systems. The city’s success could offer a model for other municipalities, but faces challenges with changing ingrained behaviors, particularly among wealthier residents. Ultimately, the experiment tests whether a focus on well-being, rather than endless consumption, can avert environmental crisis.
