New Monkey Species Discovered in Congo Faces Endangered Status

Researchers identified a new monkey species, Colobus congoensis, locally known as likweli, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The monkey is distinguished by a mask-like face and a strong odour, features not seen in other African colobus monkeys.

Scientists first noted the possibility of a new species in 2008, but confirmed its uniqueness through morphological and genetic analysis of specimens collected between 2018 and 2021. The likweli lives in a remote, inaccessible area of rainforest and appears to exist at low densities within a limited range of 1700 square kilometres.

Genetic data indicates this species diverged from its closest relative roughly 4 to 5 million years ago. Researchers are now advocating for the likweli to be listed as endangered due to hunting pressures and its restricted habitat. Formal protected status under national law could help safeguard the species from poaching and ensure its survival.
