Coal Mining Area in China Shows Vegetation Recovery

Researchers assessed vegetation cover changes from 2000 to 2024 in a hilly coal-mining region of the middle Yellow River Basin in China. Using satellite data, they found fractional vegetation cover increased across most of the study area, including within the coalfields themselves and surrounding landscapes. High-vegetation cover zones expanded considerably during the study period.

The study combined multiple statistical methods to understand these changes, acknowledging the need for careful interpretation due to temporal autocorrelation in the data. They determined precipitation had a positive relationship with vegetation cover, while temperature’s effect was less pronounced.

Actual evapotranspiration proved most strongly associated with vegetation, but researchers caution it represents a complex interaction between vegetation, water, and energy, rather than a direct cause. These findings can inform ecological restoration efforts and sustainable land management practices in similar mining regions.
