TCM Pharyngitis Trials Seek Standardized Outcomes

Researchers are developing a core outcome set for traditional Chinese Medicine treatments for pharyngitis, a common upper respiratory tract infection, in order to improve research quality. The project, based in China, aims to address inconsistencies in how clinical trials measure success. Current studies often use poorly defined or unvalidated measures, hindering comparison and the creation of reliable clinical guidelines.

The team will systematically review existing research, interview patients and clinicians, and then use a two-round Delphi survey and a consensus meeting to determine the most important outcomes to measure. This process adheres to international standards set by the Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) Initiative.

Establishing a standardized set of outcomes will reduce bias in reporting and enable more meaningful analysis of trial data. The researchers registered the study with COMET under identifier 2601, and expect the COS to support evidence-based guidelines and improve patient care.
