Researchers at an unnamed institution traced the development of Kayla, a high school physics teacher, over five years to understand how participation in a professional community shapes teacher leadership. They found her involvement evolved from improving her classroom methods to influencing school-wide policies.

This growth occurred across four areas, personal identity, social connections, teaching practices, and institutional culture, with the community providing support and credibility. Kayla successfully advocated for a new Advanced Placement Physics course and increased participation among female students.
