Zero & Empty Sets Explore the Idea of Nothing

arxiv.org · 25 March 2026

Why this is here: The research connects the mathematical properties of zero and the empty set to philosophical ideas about creation, suggesting math may be a product of human imagination.

Mathematicians examined the concept of “nothing” through both philosophy and equations. They distinguished between complete non-existence and “nothing” as a way to define differences. The study focused on how math represents absence using zero and the empty set—a set containing no elements.

Ancient Babylonians initially used zero as a placeholder. Indian mathematicians later developed zero into a number with its own algebraic properties. Zero functions as a neutral element, not changing a value when added, and an absorbing element, canceling a value when multiplied.

The empty set isn’t seen as a void, but as a fundamental building block. Modern set theory uses it to create the entire number system. Researchers also showed how “active nothing”—like adding zero—helps reveal structure in math and physics, mirroring ideas from philosophers like Nikolaus von Kues.
