AI Improves Medical Reasoning in Indian Languages

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Patna developed ArogyaSutra, a new artificial intelligence framework that boosts medical reasoning across eight languages including seven widely spoken in India. The system addresses limitations in existing AI models, which typically perform poorly when processing medical questions in languages other than English.

ArogyaSutra combines a large, newly created dataset, ArogyaBodha, with a multi-agent framework that allows the AI to use tools and remember past reasoning steps. Experiments demonstrate improved accuracy in understanding complex medical queries and interpreting medical images across all tested Indian languages.

The team also made the dataset and code publicly available. Further work could explore expanding the dataset to include even more languages and medical specialties, potentially bridging healthcare access gaps.
