Why this is here: The scientific study submitted to the Romanian Academy covers a specific area of 1,221.5 hectares, marking a concrete step toward official protection for Băneasa Forest.

Bucharest’s Băneasa Forest began the process of becoming a protected natural park with the launch of a supporting scientific study. The Bucharest Natural Park Association and the Ministry of Environment announced the initiative on International Day of Forests, March 21. The study, covering 1,221.5 hectares, has been submitted to the Romanian Academy for review before potential government approval.

Biologists George Bouroș and Vlad Cioflec authored the study. Experts from Bucharest City Hall and surrounding municipalities contributed data.

Băneasa Forest, extending into Ilfov County, is Bucharest’s largest green area and part of the historic Vlăsiei forests. Over 22,000 people signed a petition advocating for its protected status.

The proposed natural park would establish rules for conservation and public access. Authorities aim to integrate the forest into sustainable urban development plans for recreation, tourism, and climate adaptation. The initiative aligns with IUCN Category V, focusing on landscape conservation and sustainable development.
